Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Conference

This photo is taken after the RICS Conference. We had joined the conference as the student helpers. In this conference, I had worked for the registration counter. This was the event that combined of all Quantity Surveying students from several Universities and Colleges which are UM, UTM, UiTM, MARA, International Universities and so on. We are proud of our University that we were the host of this event in the year of 2013. All of the lecturers of School of Architecture, Building and Design participated in this event. We worked together as a team to make sure that this event go smoothly and nicely done. In this event, there are competitions of presentations by students between all of the Universities. Besides that, we have prepared 20 game booths for the students of other Universities to play with. All of us enjoyed the games very much. This event was hosted 2 days continuously. Building Services

Throughout the whole semester of my building services subject, I have learned and gained a lot of knowledge about services in a building. This is one of the subjects that are very new to me. I’ve learned several types of building services for example ventilation, telecommunication, storm water system, hot and cold water supply. It was difficult in the beginning because they were very new to me. There are also a lot of terms used. Our building services lecturer, Ms Mariatul Liza had lectured us patiently. She was willing to explain and teaches us whenever we had problems and difficulties. We were given an assignment in the early of the semester. She had separated us into 6 each group for the assignment. The purpose of the assignment was to study a site and explain the topic that we had chosen which was the “Indoor Environmental Quality of a Healthcare”. We went to the Sunway Medical Centre to have our research. We had faced a lot of problems and difficulties in doing this assignment. We had different ideas and sometimes we were stuck in the report. Besides that, we were assigned to make a video about the particular topic that we had chosen. In the process of doing the assignment with my group mates, I have learned how to communicate effectively with them. We were able to finish up the assignment on time. Site Surveying

Site Surveying is an interesting subject to be learned. It includes a lot of calculations and field work which I think it’s quite fun. In this subject, we were lectured by a young and funny lecturer called Mr Wong. He is a well experienced in this field and he taught us very well. We have learned quite a few topics in this subject which are distance, levelling, total stations, traverses, airborne imagery and so on. I find it difficult at first because we’ve never learned these topics before when we were in foundation and degree in semester one. After the week of mid-term semester break, we had our site surveying test for the first time. The result was quite good and acceptable. After the test, our lecturer Mr Wong brought us out of the class to have our first field work. It was fun and we had learned a lot of things practically. We had earned our experience on how actually a surveyor work on site. Without his patience and teaching of the lecturer, we wouldn’t learn how to measure the angles, traversing, and levelling. We had get the chance to use the real equipment for surveying such as theodolite, auto level meter, plumb bob, levelling staff, measuring tape, and range pole. After doing the field works, we had to write a report on levelling and traversing. It was challenging when comes to paperwork for this subject. However, we had finished it on time and they were nicely done. In a conclusion, I had a great time spending time with our lecturer and friends during our field work. It was a great subject to be learned.

Construction Technology 2

Throughout the whole semester of my Construction Technology subject, I have learned and gained a lot of knowledge about construction. I’ve learned how to read the actual drawings and identify sketches of a construction project. Our construction technology lecturer Mr Chiew had lectured us patiently. He was willing to explain and teaches us whenever we had problems and difficulties. He is the most well experienced lecturer so far I’ve met. With his patience and helpful lectures, I could understand every single thing he taught us. I have learned a lot of types of elements such as piling, portal frames, scaffoldings, diaphragm walls, foundations, underpinning, partitions and so much more. Besides that, I have learned the different types of construction methods which is very important for us in the future in our construction industry. In the early of our semester, we were given an assignment. Mr Chiew had separated us into groups for the assignment. The assignment is about a study on sites and to write a report about the sites which relevant to the topic that we have chosen. We had chosen piling as our main topic for our assignment. We did a lot of researches with books and internet. It is considered a big challenging task for us. We have 5 persons in a group and we had distributed the work evenly. We had faced a lot of problems and difficulties in doing this assignment especially looking for piling sites. We had searched a lot of sites but we were being rejected and some even ignored our proposals. We had argued and discussed for a period of time about the contents of the assignment. We had different ideas and sometimes we were confused on the overlap of content between our group mates. However, I think that our lecturer was trying to train us to become an independent student and wanted us to learn more by ourselves. In the process of doing the assignment with my group mates, I have learned how to communicate effectively with them. Without a proper communication with them, we would not be able to complete our assignment. Besides that, I was able to learn some ideas and knowledge from my group mates. Honestly, this assignment challenged our EQ. In a nutshell, our group mates were doing great and we were able to finish up the assignment on time.

Measurement 2

Throughout the whole semester of my measurement subject, I have learned and gained a lot of knowledge about construction. This is one of the subjects that is very important for our course. I’ve learned how to read actual plans and drawings of a construction project. It was very difficult in the beginning because I hardly can understand what was the lecturer talking about and I could not understand what were the drawings and plans trying to describe. We have two different lecturers within a semester name Simon Chee which was the first measurement lecturer before the mid-term break. He had taught us pilings and staircase structures and finishes. After the mid-term break, another lecturer was assigned to lecture us which was Ms Habizah. She had taught us about walls, floor finishes and ceiling finishes. They lectured us patiently. They were willing to explain and teach us whenever we had problems and difficulties. With their patience and helpful lectures, I could understand every single thing they had taught us. Even sometimes we didn’t understand their lecture, they will repeat again and again until we were fully understood. I have learned a lot of calculation methods in different types of elements such as concretes, pilings, staircases, walls, ceilings, floors and so on. We were given assignment since the early of the semester by Mr Simon Chee. He had separated us into groups for the assignment. Our assignment was to calculate a multi-story high building’s staircases which was considered a challenging task for us due to a lot of assumptions and missing information in the drawings. We had faced a lot of problems and difficulties in doing this assignment. We had different ideas and sometimes we were confused on the drawings and plans. However, I think he was trying to train us to become an independent student and wanted us to learn more by ourselves. He isn’t a lecturer that would spoon-feed us which I think that he is a good lecturer. After the mid-term break, the second lecturer Ms Habizah had also given us an assignment test in class. The test was to calculate walls and tiles finishes within three hours including the Bill of Quantities and clauses. The test was assigned to two persons in a group. During the assignment test, we didn’t manage to finish the test within three hours but we had a good experience throughout the assignment test as our lecturer told us that in the future when we are working, we need to complete our work faster compare to our test. Without a proper communication with team member, we would not be able to complete our assignment effectively. In a nutshell, we had contributed very well for the assignment test.

Intro to Myself

Hi! I'm Samuel. I grew up in a particular small town in Sabah which is located in the east of Malaysia. I love playing sports like badminton, basketball, dodge ball and etc although I'm not yet a professional. I love outdoor activities.  Music is what I enjoy the most too.  I'm currently a student from Taylor's University taking the course in  Bachelor of Quantity Surveying  I'm an fast learner who loves to learn almost everything that can be learned. Why I've chosen this course is because I like buildings and I found it very interesting to build them. I appreciate how they look and I'm very proud of the  people who built them. Besides that, my dream is to become a professional in construction industry in the future. I think I am an ambitious and adventurous person. I like to explore and discover new things in my life. I would like to see some innovations of the construction industry such as building a facade with fully automatic machinery  I would also like to see some extreme housing ideas like building a house underwater and so on. On top of that, I’m always dreaming to build hotels, bridges, tunnels, roads, and etc by my own. On the other hand, I’m also wish to build my own dream houses. I know that it is not easy to success without any hard work and there is still a long journey for me to graduate as this is my first year in degree. I have gone through a lot of problems and difficulties in my studies and I’m working like a horse to catch up. I’m trying my best to learn what I can and to become a good quantity surveyor in the future.
